Novel H1N1 flu (swine flu) first surfaced in April, 2009. Since then, it has spread throughout the U.S. and around the world. Here in South Carolina, nearly every county has reported at least one case of the new strain of flu. In the majority of reported cases, the severity of the illness has been mild. However, there have also been deaths from novel H1N1 flu in South Carolina, particularly among high risk groups.

While we’d urge caution and diligence with regard to any potential spread of the H1N1 virus in South Carolina, there is something all of us can do. On the personal and indeed family level, all of our individual actions - from washing hands to covering coughs - can in large part help halt the spread of this flu in our communities.
